New Research Center in Poznan

Telcordia, an American company, has opened its first European Technology Research Center in Poznań. It is the second Telcordia research center in the world, the first one was built in Taiwan. The center in Poznań will specialize in software development. Telcordia is expected to hire 30 employees, mainly researchers. The center in Poznań will also be an institute of applied science and will work on prototype implementation. The Poznań University of Economics, Poznań University of Technology and Adam Mickiewicz University have engaged in the enterprise and participate in a consortium formed by Telcordia. Common research projects involve, among other things, collaboration with industry and promotion of Polish inventions around the world. Next year in Poznań a new intercollegiate major: Technical Application of the Internet, the only such major in Poland, will be created. Telcordia is the leading software producer for the telecommunication sector. It has obtained over 800 patents and is a world leader in the field of software, Internet and telecommunication services. It cooperates with 18 of the 20 biggest telecommunication operators like Orange, France Telecom or O2. Telcordia’s main seat is in New Jersey. Its annual turnover is $700 million.

Poznan Laureates of the Microsoft Imagine Cup

Students from Poznań have reached the final of the Microsoft Imagine Cup competition. Two teams from Poznań University of Technology were third in the following categories: Embedded Development - Aero@put team and Software Design Interoperability Award  - Together team.

The Poznań Aero@put team presented the Ecopteron helicopter measuring several dozen centimeters, equipped with a GPS receiver, cameras and a compass which can monitor the state of the environment unmanned. Three University of Technology fourth-year computer science students: Piotr Krygier, Mikołaj Małaczyński and Jakub Pawłowski together with  Piotr Ślęzak, a student of electronics and telecommunication are the authors of the project (mentor Wojciech Świtała). The Together team, composed of: Marcin Ignac, Tomasz Nowak, Piotr Sikora, Dariusz Walczak and Marcin Wrzos (mentor Jacek Jelonek), developed a modern system which will enable drivers and pedestrians planning to go in the same direction to meet, based on generally available mobile phones. Thanks to this service a shared journey will be possible ad hoc, without any earlier plans.

The Microsoft Imagine Cup is an international computer science competition for students, organized by Microsoft. This year the competition was organized under the banner of “Imagine a world where technology enables a sustainable environment”. Over 200 thousand computer science students from over 100 countries entered this year’s sixth edition of the Microsoft Imagine Cup. 124 teams consisting of 370 students representing 61 countries and regions took part in the final in Paris. A team from Singapore came first. Teams from Ireland and China were joint second. The team from Poznań came third. Poznań University of Technology students have been in the lead in international computer science competitions for a couple of years now.

An Integrated Transport Center in Poznań



PKP SA (Polish Railway Company) plans to build a modern Integrated Transport Center in Poznań. The investment, including modernization and rebuilding of the existing main railway station and the construction of a commercial center, will occupy an area of 16.5 ha. An integrated service center for passengers using railway and bus connections, as well as urban transport and accompanying buildings: shops, offices, hotels, car parks, cafés and restaurants, will be built on an area of 300 thousand square meters. Most of the services will be located on levels and platforms above the existing peat bogs. The investor will be chosen by PKP through negotiation. The construction of the transportation part of the center will be finished in 2012.

Tallest Building in Poland to be Erected in Poznań

Spanish investors plan to build “Poznań Forum”, a 55-storey multi-functional 285-meter tall building. Offices will take up most of the building’s area, apartments are to be built on the highest floors. On the last, revolving floor there will be a casino and a restaurant with a view of Poznań. There will also be a 5 star hotel with 170 rooms, shopping and service centers and an underground car park for 1000 cars. In front of the entrance a large square, surrounded by a garden and open for everybody, will be built. It will be the tallest building in Poland. The estimated cost of the investment is € 300 million. The beginning of the construction is planned for early 2009, the end – for June 2012. 700 people will be employed in the building. Two building contractors from La Coruña, Spain, form the investment group. The building was designed by the Spanish design office AMA.

The Year of Climate and Environment in Poznań

This year is the Year of Climate and Environment in Poznań, the December United Nations Climate Change Conference will be the crowning moment of the year. Events connected with environmental protection are taking place in the city all year round. Until now, Nelly Furtado’s outdoor concert has been the most spectacular event promoting the Year of Climate and Environment. Moreover, a concert of the only recycling orchestra in the world, playing instruments made of recycled materials, took place together with an attempt to break the Guinness record for the biggest orchestra of its kind. The “Clean Business 2008” competition was open for entrepreneurs for undertakings and solutions connected with environmental protection. Poznań is becoming a leader of the popularization of ecological awareness.
